A medical scientist who discovered anaesthesia and made its opponents unconscious.

If an operation is to be performed, it is likely to be successful only if the operation is performed under anaesthesia and the body feels no pain, but before the invention of anaesthesia, patients underwent painful operations.

It was very difficult for the doctors to endure the pain and operate on the patients while they screamed. James Young Simpson came up with the idea of finding a better anaesthetic for surgery.

Simpson had the idea to find a better drug that could only cause sedation without harming the body, so he turned his house into a research laboratory. He continued to do research at the hospital and home.

His research examined each item and sniffed it with great care. He sniffed all the objects in sight, summoned objects from many places and looked at them. He tried consuming all the things that he had never seen before in his life and examined whether he felt dizzy.

One day he was continuously studying with his Collaborating doctors and the whole night the doctors were studying by consuming various substances and seeing if they got dizzy. It was then that Simpson remembered something that a few days ago a chemist from Liver Flower had sent him a substance but he had thrown it away.

He immediately ran and fetched the liquid from the dustbin and asked the doctors who were with him to sniff it first and then seeing that they were a little faint, Simpson also sniffed the medicine.

In no time everyone fainted and after ten minutes everyone woke up and was surprised to see that this liquid was making everyone unconscious. That is chloroform, after sniffing the liquid in the nose, produces a crackle and leads to deep unconsciousness.

After discovering this, they gave it to many painful patients in the hospital and operated painlessly and this chloroform medicine became effective in obstetrics.

How did he overcome the objections that arose?

James Young Simpson

Calvinist clergy in Scotland objected to the use of chloroform during operations on women's children. They pointed to the Bible that God gave women pain in childbirth, but Simpson denied this and pointed to some examples from the Bible to argue that what he did was right.

The argument escalated to Queen Victoria of England, who resolved the issue by using chloroform as a pain reliever when she gave birth to her eighth and ninth child. After that, all kinds of protests were subdued.

The Queen of England appointed him as the palace physician. The French Academy of Sciences accepted Simpson as its member.

This medical scientist who discovered chloroform, which produces only unconsciousness without harming the body, gave rise to the field of anaesthesia in medical studies. Simpson was the main reason why the idea of finding pain relievers developed after Simpson.
