Project to show floating metal ring in free space

Floating metal ring project

Principle

It is a principle of physics that when a current flows through a conductor, a magnetic field is induced. Based on this principle, a metal ring can be created to show a floating in space.

Concept

As soon as an AC current is generated through a coil of wire, a magnetic field is generated. The magnetic field generated in this way induces a current in the opposite direction of the ring. The field formed by the metal ring opposes the field of the coil. Due to this, the ring is lifted slightly upwards. Now, when you look at it, the metal ring looks like it is floating on its own without any connection. This is due to the magnetic force that is generated.

Required materials

A piece of iron wire is about 12 centimetres long and 1 centimetre in diameter.

A metal ring with a hole about 1.5 centimetres in diameter.

Two circular pieces of cardboard.

26 gauge coated copper wire.

Procedure

Place two pieces of cardboard on an iron rod about 8 cm apart. Make a coil with at least 400 turns between these two pieces.

Make a coil by wrapping it with copper wire. Now you have made a coil. Place an iron rod in the middle of the two pieces of cardboard and wrap the copper wire around the areas between the cards to form a coil.

Place a metal ring on the ion rod. Connect both ends of the coil to the AC mains. The ring is lifted upwards in the air and demonstrates the force of magnetic levitation and when viewed, it appears to be floating in space.
