Various references to it can be found in ancient medical
texts. It is clear from those ancient texts that garlic is used to treat
diseases or ailments such as haemorrhoids, arthritis, skin allergies, stomach
pain, and cough, loss of appetite, weight loss, chickenpox, and fever.
It is mentioned in ancient Egyptian texts that when the
pyramids, which are considered one of the wonders of the world today, were
built, they gave garlic to the workers involved in its construction work to
make them work enthusiastically. Hippocrates, who is referred to as the father
of medicine, mentioned the medicinal properties of garlic in his notes.
He stated that garlic was used as a medicine for wounds,
toothaches, and various physical pains. In ancient French texts, there is a
reference to the use of garlic as a medicine for worms, heat-induced tumours,
and the effects of dog and snake bites.
There are also references to the detoxifying properties of
garlic in some old medical texts. Garlic has generally been used in ancient
times based on experience.
It was also found that garlic is antibacterial. Raw garlic is
very effective against many types of bacteria, and garlic juice prevents the growth
of bacteria. As a result, the number of bacteria found in the intestinal tract
is greatly reduced.
This greatly destroys the germs that cause cholera, typhoid
fever and some health problems and prevents the occurrence of diseases. Garlic
juice is effective against many fungi.
Since garlic is both a disinfectant and an insecticide,
adding small amounts of garlic to the food of chickens raised in places such as
poultry farms helps to quickly control many diseases.
Unlike some other medicinal products, garlic is non-toxic and
does not cause any side effects. Since garlic is a natural disease-fighting
food, it can be said to be a very beneficial and safe natural medicine. Doctors
say that the chemical allicin found in garlic is responsible for the medicinal
properties of garlic.
