HOW TO COMPUTE THE SPEED OF SOUND IN AIR BY NEWTON’S METHOD

We think about how we compute the velocity of sound in air. Because the velocity of sound is a different medium. Usually, the velocity of sound is higher in solid. The hypersonic and supersonic are measured with the speed of sound. We definitely know about the velocity of sound in air because it is essential very measurement.

Newton thinks about how to compute the speed of sound in air. Already the velocity of the longitudinal wave is found. Newton thought that the formula of the velocity of a longitudinal wave was compared to Boyle’s law.

We know that sound waves are longitudinal and when they propagate in air compression and rarefaction are formed. Sound propagates in air, and the formation of compression and rarefaction is very slow. This slow formation process is called as isothermal in nature.

Consider air molecules, assume the temperature of the air is constant, pressure increases and volume decreases. Here we can understand the air molecules to form an ideal gas.

But this theoretical value is definitely changed with practical value. Because of experimentally velocity of sound is measured in air at 0oC. So the experimental value is up to 16% more than the theoretical value. The high difference indicates the best method of measurement of the velocity of sound is the experimental one.
